The Time Machine

We also like to get nostalgic. It's always the good old days. Past seems to be happier than the present. There can be many reasons for this feeling. Maybe because we now see only the selected part of the past that too with rose-tinted glass. Maybe we no more have to deal with the annoyances of navigating through a present day. Also, there is no uncertainty in the past, it's all over, unlike the present.

School days, childhood plays and time spent with old friends all seems so soothing. There are different ways to time travel into our past. One can look at the old photo albums, go visit your school, home town and places of your youth days. Calling old friends and discussing the events happened then is also a way to recall the past. But the fastest time machine is smell and fragrance. Take out any old perfume bottle and sniff. It will take you to a different period of your life in a jiffy.

One can look at the old photo albums, go visit your school, home town and places of your youth days... But the fastest time machine is smell and fragrance.

As per Pamela Dalton, a researcher at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, “Odours are processed a little bit differently than the other sensory systems because all other sensory systems are routed through a structure in the brain called the thalamus, which acts like a gatekeeper. Smell bypasses the thalamus, which Dalton calls the 'consciousness detector’. “(The smell goes) directly to the primary olfactory cortex, and that may be why we experience odours in a different way than we do other kinds of sensory stimuli”, says Dalton.

Thus the keys to The Time Machine are in the old perfume bottles.

Now go take an old empty bottle and time travel.
