Mutton Samosa, Pineapple Pastry and Coffee

Writer's picture: ThirteenThirteen

It so happened that one day a man took his young boy to a famous-posh restaurant in Shimla and ordered their regular - mutton samosa, pineapple pastry and coffee for the young boy. Their regular order doesn't mean that they frequented this place. They visited the place once in six months. Again, not as a ritual, but simply because they could only afford such lavish outings on special occasions as the man worked on a meagre salary for the forest department.

The young boy was confused for they had visited this place just a few weeks ago and here they were once again. But when the delicacies come in front of you, you don't question, you simply indulge right away!

Then the bill arrived and he saw his father tip the waiter double the amount he usually did. This made him more curious. He asked his father, have you been promoted? What's the occasion?

His father who had become aware of the young boy's tenth-grade marks revealed to him that he had failed in his examination. He continued further that they were celebrating his failure.

The young boy, none other than Mr Anupam Kher, says that that one incident took out the fear of failure for life and it made him take risks and big leaps fearlessly.

Often, we associate failure with an individual and there comes a sense of shame, disgrace and humiliation. If we see failure as a mere event and not an individual then it simply means that the individual has failed in that one aspect but not failed herself/ himself. That one incident took the air out of the failure for Mr Anupam. When are you getting your mutton samosa, pineapple pastry and coffee?
