The word ‘choice’ as we understand in our day-to-day reference is the act of choosing one between two or more possibilities or options laid ahead of us. However, choice, if we observe closely we can see distinctly, is an act of bringing a will and an alignment to the option we pick. The act of picking one over the other presented alternatives was in fact not a choice but a decision made based on certain measurable and immeasurable parameters.
If this distinction in the meaning of choice is clear, then please proceed further with the reading.
Let us do a small exercise of introspection. Pick something that you’re resisting – it could be a person, your work, a situation or anything from your life. But pick such a situation that you are resisting but are obligated to also do, deal with, go through. In our colloquial language, we might say that we’re doing this because we don’t have a choice. What we really mean is that we don’t have an option. If we notice, we’ve conveniently and casually replaced the word ‘option’ with ‘choice’ in this context.
Now, take a moment to pause, be with this situation that you’ve been resisting. Look at it closely. You will notice that our resistance is coming from our past baggage, our opinions, our biases. But that’s a topic for some other day. What is to be observed here is that if the past was something different, we may not have resisted this situation.
But if this is a situation that you’re going through despite your resistance, consider that you’re doing it not out of obligation but because you need to or you think this to be an appropriate thing to do. If that is so, then it is futile to try and fix the past from where the resistance is coming. That will never work! It is here that if we genuinely choose the situation or circumstance instead of resisting and still doing it will alter our way of being.
But why should we choose?
Whether we choose or not, outwardly we’re still performing that situation and therefore oriented towards the desired result. It is only by choosing that inwardly we’re at ease and peace. From that space, who knows that outwardly we may perform even better towards the chosen situation. The journey most certainly becomes sweeter.
