Being with the craving

Most of the time that we experience craving, particularly while leading a sedentary life, it is of compulsive nature. The craving could be that of food, a certain habit like checking our phone, or swiping through the social media feed, watching television, traveling or anything.

In these moments, it is only enquiring what kind of craving it is allows us to see the nature of our craving. Once we identify the nature of our craving (and, if it is compulsive particularly) we have a choice to act upon it.

Deep within, we already know that succumbing to our compulsive craving isn't very healthy. But choosing to then observe and be with it for a while without acting offers a chance for us to see what it does to us emotionally, psychologically, pathologically and physically. Thus, we have a choice to simply to allow us to wait for a while longer and not act.

Like any emotion, even any form of a craving too is momentary. It's fleeting. Allowing to not act upon it immediately and rather enquiring may offer us a chance to break from that habit which we have often aspired for but haven't found a way to do so.

NOTE: In this case, being with the craving may not be misunderstood as suppressing the craving. Neither this post is a prescription to break a habit, it is just a personal observation shared with a hope that the reader finds their own ways to work with their craving by observing within.
