Reading is an act of finding a space of your own even while sharing a space with four others on a bench meant to seat three in an overcrowded local train of an overcrowded city!
I've come to realise that any form of reading takes us into a different world, a world that provokes us to experience through our imagination rather than the physical senses which we use to navigate the world. It's a powerful tool, but we often don't realise the potential that it withholds.
But beyond mere provoking us to imagine a world other than what is around us, reading makes us ponder, think and reflect. Reading makes us look at things that could be different from our conventional understanding, beyond our comfort zone and having different perspectives. Reading exposes us to alternative realities and brings us closer to ourselves.
Reading is a monologue with a twist. It is an act of speaking to ourselves but through other's scripts! If the scripts have multiple characters, all get enacted through us, even the physical setup is created within. And in doing so, we find our favourite individuals, scenarios, situations and spaces. It's bewildering. (And, for those who think reading is overrated, it's actually underrated!)
