A knife which is used to cut an apple can also be used to kill someone. Same goes with gadgets of the digital age. In the past when sellers used different gadgets like compass, sand-timer, telescope etc., they used it for enabling their voyage. They never got indulged into those gadgets. Imagine Columbus getting indulged with a compass and losing focus of his expedition. He would have never found America! Why then are we so attached to the modern digital gadgets? What is the underlying attraction of these tools? If we see closely there can be multiple reasons.

Social media on these gadgets gives us a dopamine rush which is addictive.

Platforms like Netflix, Prime Video etc. are an easy escape into a fantasy world.

Chatting apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp gives us a feeling of belongingness.

Many gaming apps are well designed to keep you hooked to your devices.

All the things we do on these devices appear like an addiction. And, in a way, we are emotionally numbing ourselves from the reality. We run away from our emotions and feelings. It's an escape.

There cannot be an extreme stand when it comes to these devices. One cannot say a complete 'no' to any of them. What is important thus is to be aware of one’s level of indulgence and to strike a balance while using these gadgets.
